If you have XP Pro then following steps may also help you to increase the bandwidth of your connection.

First click on start, then go to Run.
Now enter "gpedit.msc" and then hit ok.
Now go to the computer configuration then administrative templates and then network.
Now click on the folder "QoS Packet Scheduler".
Right click on "Reservable Bandwidth", and then select properties.
Now change it to "enabled" from "Not Configured" and set the bandwidth limit to "0".
Now click on OK

After doing it you have to follow few more steps.

Go to "My Network Places", and then "View Network Connections".
Now right click on your internet connection you want to work for and the select Properties.
Before leaving make sure that "QoS packet Scheduler" is checked off.

After this all, close everything that is open and restart your computer system. The bandwidth is increased 20% more than the available.
